BOTOX® & DYSPORT®
Botox® and Dysport® are two brands of botulinum toxin type A injectables used in the U.S. According to statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, botulinum toxin injections are the most popular minimally invasive cosmetic procedure available.
Each Year in the US, More than Six Million Botox® and Dysport® Treatments are Provided
While these brands and formulas are similar in most ways, there are a few key differences. The most important thing to know about these treatments is that the injection technique affects the results far more than the brand of botulinum toxin type A used.
The face has 43 distinct muscles, and the effectiveness of the injections depends entirely on whether the injection administrator targets the correct area. Because of this, the injections should only be given by a knowledgeable aesthetic physician. When you visit our professional medical cosmetics staff at Aesthetic Art, we have the background, training, and experience to give you the best injections for the best results.
Both injections are typically administered every 4–6 months, depending on the patient’s needs. The number of shots given during the procedure depends entirely on the area and severity of the wrinkles you’re treating. The injection process typically takes about 15 minutes and doesn’t require any recovery time or anesthesia.

The Differences Between Botox® and Dysport®
While both use the same medication, the size of the molecules in the injections are significantly different. Dysport® injections contain comparatively smaller molecules of botulinum toxin type A. There are far more similarities between the products than there are unique traits; however, key differences worth noting include:
- Dysport® has a smaller molecule size, allowing it to spread easier and affect a large area. This can be an advantage or disadvantage depending on the treatment area.
- Botox® may last slightly longer than Dysport® in many patients. Both injections must typically be administered 2–4 times per year, but some patients’ results last up to 12 months.
- Dysport® begins working slightly faster, and onset takes 2–5 days, while Botox® takes 4–7 days to set in.

Dysport® and Botox® FAQ
To help you learn about the detailed differences between the two neuromodulators, we’ve answered some of the most commonly questions asked by our Palm Springs patients about these popular procedures.
What Are Expression Lines?
Expression lines are the wrinkles and lines that develop due to constant muscle movement. Years of facial movement lead to the development of crow’s feet, frown lines, laugh lines, and other fine lines. These cosmetic injectables are wonderful for targeting these signs of aging.
How Do Botox® and Dysport® Work?
Certain muscles in the face are responsible for certain expression lines, or wrinkles. These injectables are neuromodulators; they prevent muscles from receiving signals from the brain. Once they are injected, the neuromodulators keep the muscles relaxed and prohibit their contraction, which then softens the appearance of their corresponding expression lines.
Are Injectable Wrinkle Treatments Safe?
Botox® and Dysport®’s main ingredient, botulinum toxin type A, is commonly found in nature. They contain such minuscule amounts of botulinum toxin type A that it poses little to no threat to users. Both injectables have been cleared by the FDA, and after having been used by millions of people around the globe and undergone countless clinical trials, both are widely considered to be some of the safest cosmetic treatments available.
Are Botox® and Dysport® Painful?
Both injectables are delivered using an incredibly fine needle, so most patients report the treatment as feeling relatively comfortable. Some patients are more sensitive to pain, and in those cases, numbing or a topical anesthetic can be used to completely eliminate any discomfort or pain.
What’s the Recovery Like Botox® and Dysport®?
As the solution is applied with a thin needle, the treatment won’t require any incisions or sutures. Patients will be able to return to their work or go home immediately after the procedure. Some patients do experience some swelling and soreness at the injection sites, but these are only temporary and should dissipate within a day or two.
Who’s the Ideal Patient for Dysport® or Botox®?
Treatment can be used for patients of all skin tones and skin types. Patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding or suffering from any neurological disorders should avoid using neuromodulators. Patients who want to reduce the appearance of expression lines or those who want to treat conditions like migraine headaches, temporomandibular joint disorder, excessive sweating, and more, are ideal patients.
